MIDDLE SCHOOL APPLICATION PROCESS

ON-TIME CHOICES APPLICATION WINDOW

This year's CHOICES Application window is October 2 - November 17, 2023.

Dr. KEITH ABRAHAMS' "MAGNET POINTS/CHOICES" PRESENTATION

Please join us on Thursday, September 21st @ 6:30pm on Zoom for a meeting with Dr. Keith Abrahams,

Executive Director of Student Integration Services with LAUSD. Dr. Abrahams will be discussing the LAUSD Choices Application & Magnet Point System. He will have helpful information for anyone looking ahead to middle school and beyond.

OVERVIEW

If your child is in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade and you plan on staying in LAUSD for middle school, your child can acquire points in order to be eligible to apply to magnet programs. You may apply through the Choices application online. Each time you apply and do not receive a spot, you acquire points that you can bank and use for the middle school application when the time comes.

Points expire after three years so it is wise to start applying when your child is in 2nd grade (if you're hoping to move your child for 6th grade) OR in 3rd grade (if you're hoping to move your child for 7th grade). This way you're able to bank the maximum amount of points without them expiring.

One strategy parents use is to apply to a schools that are difficult to get into. If your child is not offered a spot or is waitlisted in one of these in-demand schools, you'll acquire a certain amount of points for that school year's application. If your child is offered a spot and you don’t accept the spot, you will lose your points.

Additional points are collected if your local/home school is a PHBAO school or Overcrowded. As of the 2022/2023 school year, Mt. Washington Elementary school is a NON-PHBAO school and is NOT Overcrowded. *Those students that attend MWE through one of the many permits offered through the district will have a different local/home school and may qualify to acquire these PHABAO and/or Overcrowded points.

Again, the points do expire after 3 years, so it is advised to begin accruing points starting in 2nd-3rd grade depending on when your child plans to begin middle school.

LAUSD has a lot more information on how and when to apply here.
