Welcome to Mount Washington

Hello New Families,

I’d like to use this space to welcome you to Mount Washington Elementary.  I’m sure this is not how you’d imagined your “2020 first-day-of-school” but, as the now commonplace saying goes, we are living in unprecedented times.  In spite of massive upheavals happening at all levels of society, the Mount Washington Elementary PTA is committed to supporting you and your children during your time at MWE.  Both the school and the PTA are working assiduously to ensure that our children, families, and community have opportunities to thrive.  Please see below for some useful information on how to find out what’s happening and how to get involved.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.  I look forward to hearing from you (and seeing you on Zoom).

Cara Gillis

MWE PTA VP-Communications.

e-Howl: Each week the PTA publishes the e-Howl, our school newsletter. Reading the e-Howl is THE BEST WAY to stay up-to-date on school news and events, so please sign up here.

Virtual Monday Morning Assembly: On Monday mornings Principal Gravino will send out a link (via email and/or robocall) to the weekly virtual Monday morning assembly: Wolf World – Season 2. You can stay connected by watching Wolf World with your children.

PTA MembershipJoining the MWPTA enables you to become part of an active coalition of motivated and dedicated families and friends that have helped shape Mount Washington Elementary. If you’re able to, please purchase memberships for yourself, your partner, and your children - all are welcome. Membership is $6.00 per person and you can join online by clicking PTA Membership Application. By joining the PTA you will add your voice to an organization committed to the well-being of our children, our school, and our community.

Volunteers: MWE would not be the place it is without our dedicated parent volunteers. Some parents help in the classrooms, some work on fundraising and school events, and others pitch in however and whenever they can. We ask for volunteers often, so please jump in when you can. Please know that all contributions of time, talent, and treasure are deeply appreciated and go toward enhancing our children’s experience at school. For more information or to sign up, please contact Michelle Z. at

Room Representatives: Each classroom will have at least one room representative who manages class volunteers and supply requests throughout the year and serves as a liaison between the teacher and parents. The room representative is also responsible for the class contact list and distributes PTA information and announcements. If you are interested in being a Room Rep, please reach out to our Coordinator Michelle Jacoby at

Fundraising & Community Events: Donations bridge the gap between the money our school requires to robustly meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of our children and the money our school gets from various governmental sources. The current Covid-related economic crisis will undoubtedly exacerbate this gap for schools around the country, making fundraising both more difficult yet also more needed.  Every year, we appeal to the MWE parent community for their support to provide programs that would, in an ideal world, be funded by LAUSD.  Given the economic privileges of the surrounding school area, classroom aides, drama, physical education and art instruction are not funded by LAUSD financial streams. Parent-led and parent-involved fundraising is an important source of economic stability for our school. We recognize that financial giving is likely more difficult this year, but we hope that, if you're able to, you will volunteer for and plan on attending any of our fun and exciting events.  Please contact Dawn Dunbar at

Programs:  MWPTA provides a variety of after-school options to enhance your child’s education and keep them active and engaged. Professional after-school enrichment provider, Parker-Anderson, brings a staff of highly trained instructors and intellectually stimulating classes to students in a fun and exciting way and our incredibly talented neighborhood and parent community also offer a variety of classes.  Visit After School Enrichment Classes for the latest schedule.

Additionally, through the Arts Collective After School (ACAS), once a month an arts-focused, maker-centric community partner engages our students in an innovative and exploratory project. ACAS hosts individuals and groups on campus with emphases in engineering and the arts. Visit Arts Collective After School for more information.  The workshop schedule can be found in the MWPTA Calendar.  All of our programs and classes will be offered virtually for Fall 2020.

Friends of Mt. Washington School: FOMWS, our school’s booster club, brings in outside funding from generous neighbors, corporations, and friends to sponsor vital programs for our kids such as school music & robotics programs, Enrich LA as well as beautification projects around campus. The Garden Committee and Green Team is coordinated through parent and community member support throughout the year. The FOMWS Auction is a super-fun event that showcases original art from each classroom and exciting donations from the community to raise money to support important programs for our kids and school as a whole.  If you are interested in joining FOMWS please contact Jenn Bauman at

Chat with the Principal: These informal monthly gatherings give parents the opportunity to hear directly from Principal Gravino. The small group setting is a great place to meet other parents and bring up any general concerns or questions. The schedule will be included on the PTA Calendar, the eHowl, and in Mrs. Gravino’s monthly newsletters.  For Fall 2020 these events will be held online.
