Help us create memories you and your family will cherish!
Dear MWE Parents,
Mount Washington Elementary is such a special school. Aside from our wonderful teachers, staff and principal, our school flourishes due to our amazing community. Your skills, knowledge and heart are needed! Whether it is helping your child’s teacher, participating in our events or lending your creative talents, there is a fun and fulfilling volunteer opportunity for every parent (and grandparent!).
Our PTA and our booster organization, Friends of Mt. Washington School (FOMWS), offer various opportunities to be involved in your child’s journey. There is always something inspiring and fun happening at our school. Our committees would love to have you!
Unfortunately 2020-21 will be an especially challenging year for us all. Some opportunities and events will be placed on hold until we can safely return to campus. These are indicated with an *. However, our PTA is committed to finding unique and enriching ways we can all stay connected as a community. We are planning some amazing virtual events and we are also creating new roles that we may find necessary as we navigate this unprecedented situation. We are learning as we go along. So if you are able to donate your time, please check back here often to see if there are new ways you can help!
To find a volunteer opportunity that speaks to you please see the roles and descriptions listed below. Please fill out the form or feel free to contact our Volunteers Chair, Michelle Z, at email@example.com
Arts Collective After School (ACAS)
PTA Reflections Art Program Committee
Every year our kids participate in the National PTA Reflections Art Program. It's a wonderful chance for our students to showcase their talents. We need parents who are able to assist in facilitating and curating the exhibit at our school. For more information, visit Reflections Art Program https://www.pta.org/home/programs/reflections
Classroom Volunteer *
If you enjoy working with students or would love to lend your teacher a hand this is for you! You may work with students on various projects, take work home to prepare for activities or assignments, or chaperone a field trip. Talk to your child’s teacher or ask your Room Representative about volunteering in the classroom. LAUSD requires a volunteer application and proof of a negative TB test for all classroom volunteers. Please return forms to the office prior to your first volunteer day. Please see the Volunteer Application Process at https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10443
Since we will all be relying on technology to get us through remote learning we need to effectively disseminate teacher/parent information. If you would like to collaborate with your child’s classroom teacher to act as a parent contact and liaison this role is for you! Each classroom needs help to recruit parent volunteers, help promote PTA programs and events, and send weekly school/classroom updates to your fellow class parents.
Room Parent-Classroom/Yearbook Photographer *
Shutterbugs please read! Are you always ready to capture that adorable moment in your child's life? How about capturing them with their school friends and teachers too? There are so many fun moments happening in the classroom and at events. We need parents from each class who would love to document some memories for all of us to enjoy. Sign up here if you are interested in being your Classroom Photographer and we can link you up with your Class Room Rep.
Room Parent-Materials & Supplies Distribution
With distance learning there may be occasions where materials and/or supplies will need to be distributed. This role will be a great help to your teacher, your children's classmates and to many of your fellow parents.
Remote learning has proven to be a challenge for many. If you are tech-savvy and can lend a hand to your teacher, other classmates or their parents you will be the class rockstar in no time!
FOMWS Garden Committee *
Do you have a connection to nature or are curious about plants and tiny wildlife? You don't need a green thumb to be a part of this wonderful committee. But if you do, this is definitely for you! Help your child’s class learn about growing their own fruits and veggies, or help them figure out what kind of strange bug is lurking in their backyard! Classroom Garden Reps get to see firsthand the joy and fun the kids have learning about the wonderful world around them.
FOMWS Green Team *
Every Monday morning during the school year you will find Green Team parents out front collecting recyclables. This not only helps our environment it helps our school. Each student that brings in their recyclables receives a ticket and a prize winner is drawn during the morning assembly. The kids love it! It's a win-win all around! Sign up if you would like to join this team!
Holiday Toy Drive *
Every December during the holiday season we collect and deliver donations to help our neighbors in need. If you would like to assist in publicizing, coordinating, collecting or delivering we would love your help!
We are contemplating ways to get our kids outdoors and take a break from their screens. If you are willing and able to, we may possibly coordinate small hiking groups with social-distancing measures in mind. If you know your way around the hills and nature trails we would love your expertise!
Social-emotional health is imperative. Our kids need us to help navigate the emotional ups and downs of life. Plus parenting is hard so we parents need each other too! This committee is designed to help us learn the tools and resources that are needed to support our children on their path to adulthood. Learn more about this wonderful committee: https://mwpta.membershiptoolkit.com/socialemotional
TK/K Playground Committee *
This committee is exactly as it sounds! We find fun imaginative and safe ways for our little ones to have a good time on our playground. Join this team to help brainstorm new ideas and be a part of some wonderful creative activities such as the Loose Parts Program. We guarantee seeing our tiniest Wolves having the time of their lives will be a reward in and of itself.
Family Game Night *
Our school loves to have a good time together! We always need help coordinating and it’s wonderful watching families bring out their competitive-yet friendly side. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun. So why not participate and help out?
Halloween Carnival *
This is THE event you want to be involved in. Our Halloween Carnival is a total blast for the kids and parents. If you love to create haunted houses, gooey potions, spooky cauldrons and scary mazes you absolutely need to sign up for this! You will definitely be the cool parent on campus!
Mt Washington Made Craft Fair/Pancake Breakfast *
The Mt. Washington Made/Pancake Breakfast event is legendary around these hills! We’ve been known to have folks line up super early for a chance to nab the latest fashionable pants! We are also possibly known for having the tastiest Pancake Breakfast event in NELA! Help folks fill their bellies full of yummy pancakes, delicious coffee or bag their new favorite find. The kids love it, the parents love it, the community loves it! Be a part of the crew that pulls off this amazing event.
PTA Event Hospitality *
Are you great at hosting parties and know exactly what folks like to eat and drink? We need your hospitality! We need that amazing individual that can find and deliver tasty treats to certain PTA events. If this is right up your alley we’d love to have you!
Winter Book Fair
Love books? Help our kids find and purchase their new favorite book! Our annual Book Fair is a huge success and we are always in need of parent volunteers to help with the operation. For the 2020-21 year, the Book Fair will be virtual but help may be needed in distributing purchased books to families.
Direct Appeal Campaign
Our amazing school relies heavily on our MWE families for funding. With a healthy budget we are able to provide important educational programs, school equipment, and vital resources our children need in order to thrive. Getting involved with this fundraising campaign is a great way to meet other families while having a positive impact on our students’ experience at MWE.
FOMWS Auction Committee *
The school’s booster organization, Friends of Mt. Washington School, are experts at planning a fun night out! This annual fundraiser is a huge success. Every year they come up with a creative theme to dress up to and folks are able to have a friendly bidding war over the coolest items. So much prep goes into this event. If you know how to throw a good party join this team!
We know we are the most stylish school in NELA and we are proud to show it! We have some super cool apparel, totes, and other products to show off our MWE love. If you would like to help the Merch committee with organizing and selling inventory hit that sign-up button!
Danforth Gate Monitor *
When the Danforth Gate entrance to school is open our morning drop-offs are a breeze! It significantly helps ease the congestion at the front of the school. In order to have this entrance open we just need a group of awesome parents who can supervise the gate from 7:40-8:15 am. Shifts are rotated throughout the week. It keeps our kids safe and it is a wonderful way to meet the students and other parents. Bring your coffee and enjoy greeting those happy smiling faces as they make their way to line-up.
Lost & Found *
Ugh, we know. Stuff goes missing pretty quickly and quite frequently! It’s hard for our kids to keep track of all the things they need to bring to school. Be their hero (and their parents hero!) by helping us organize the lost and found cabinet so everyone is reunited with their beloved items! We have periodic clean-outs as well so there are plenty of chances for happy reunions.
Office Volunteer *
So much goes into running our awesome school. We are so fortunate to have such amazing faculty and staff. Once in a while they may need assistance with certain tasks such as helping out in the office, collating and organizing materials, or supervising students during recess, lunch, or after school. Sounds interesting to you? Sign up here or stop by and say hi to Yoli and Natalie.
Playground Supervision *
The playground. A chance for our kids to run free and get all that energy out! But let’s be honest here, without a lot of supervision it can turn into Lord of the Flies quickly! That’s where you can step in by being that extra pair of eyes in case a child needs help with their jump rope or finding their bouncy ball. Our Yard Aides would be grateful for the assistance. Plus it’s a great way to get to know the kids while providing a safe environment.
Safety Valet *
We get it. Morning drop-offs can be stressful. Luckily we have an amazing dedicated group of parents that are able to help make our mornings a little smoother. If you want to be that parent that helps our fellow parents breathe a sigh of relief, sign up for this opportunity. Ensuring our kids have a safe exit from vehicles while keeping traffic moving smoothly will make grateful parents have a wonderful start to their day. Volunteer from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. daily, weekly or on a rotating basis.
Snack Shack *
Everyday after school our kids flock to the coolest spot on campus, The Wolves Den Snack Shack. We need parents to stock the Shack with healthy yummy treats, supervise the line and help with snack purchases. The best part? You get to work side-by-side with your child and score some cool points. Shifts are rotated throughout the week. Bonus: it’s a great way for your kid to learn about money, math and some business skills. And F.Y.I., the popsicles! Be sure there are ALWAYS plenty of popsicles!
SOCIAL DISTANCE/VIRTUAL EVENTS (Covid Life)
Are you perfecting your Pavlova skills as we speak? Do you have a secret rustic bread recipe that will bring us all to our knees? Want to help us brainstorm ways to create a fun and friendly competition to raise some money for our school? Sign up here and let’s do this!
Baking/Cooking with the PTA
Are you often in the kitchen creating delicious delights? Are you able to bake brownies, cookies and cakes that all the kids in Mt. Washington will be talking about for years? Or maybe you know how to rock a good casserole or the ultimate pizza for family movie night? We need your talent and skills! This is your chance to have your own “cooking channel” and teach us all how to bring out our inner chef. Ideas welcome!
Book Club for Parents
Book nerds look no further! We need some reading inspiration! With all of us stuck at home we need to find ways to stay connected and to stay off of our devices. (Impossible, we know! But let's at least give it a try!) Help us find that book that we just can't put down. Make us read at least 30 pages a week! Maybe once we all have read said book we can gather outside, 6' apart mind you, and discuss. And quite possibly, we can have a slice of normalcy once in a while. Ideas welcome!
Are you always down to get-down? Do you know how to boogie with the best of them? We need parents who can host virtual MWE Dance Parties to keep our kids active, engaged and enjoying life! Freestyle your way over here and press that sign up button!
Progressive Pop-Up Dinners
We are all missing normal life right now. What a treat it would be to have a nice relaxing dinner out with good food, family and friends. We can still find a way to do that by hosting a community Progressive Pop-Up Dinner that adheres to current safety guidelines. If you are good at planning menus and logistics we need your help!
Trunk or Treat
C’mon, we aren’t going to let Covid ruin our Halloween right? It’s a bummer our kids may not be able to gather with their friends and roam the streets of Mt. Washington in search of the best candy in the neighborhood. So we are bringing them the next best thing. MWE PTA presents Trunk or Treat! The idea is to provide a safe way for our kids to parade their Halloween costumes and score some goodies all with social distancing measures in place. We are going to need parents that can fill their trunks with treats and help keep the Halloween spirit alive on our mountain.
Virtual Family Game Night
Our school is committed. Committed to our kids, to each other, to the community and to finding ways to adapt and stay connected. One fun solution? A virtual family game night! And we know we can pull it off even at a distance through our tiny screens. We need some virtual hosts, folks with creative ideas and maybe a few runners to distribute any game materials that might be needed in order to play. Ideas welcome!
